One of SBMS’ objectives is to support advocacy relevant to Syrian doctors in the UK and internationally. This includes joining relevant meetings and groups advocating for the rights of Syrian doctors and other health professionals in the UK (SBMS representatives joined meetings with HEE/ BMA/ GMC/ NHSEI and others last year) and will join another meeting in March 2022.
As part of our advocacy and public engagement efforts, members of SBMS board and the wider SBMS community, support efforts around teaching, seminars and writing relating to medicine and on other issues relevant to our members. If you would like to make any suggestions, please get in touch.
Below we share examples of recent advocacy efforts.
In January 2022, SBMS published a statement regarding the trial in Germany of the Syrian doctor who is accused of crimes against humanity. Please read more here
In January 2022, SBMS highlighted the heavy snowfalls in Syria and Lebanon which cause further hardship to IDPs and refugees. This prompted a fundraising effort to support various UK and non-UK based organisations who are providing relief for these vulnerable populations. Please see further information here
